Beach Boys

BIOGRAPHY

The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The original lineup of the group consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and their friend Al Jardine. Known for their vocal harmonies and early surf songs, they are one of the most influential acts of the rock era. The Beach Boys started out as a family-managed group, with Brian's compositions having a strong jazz influence. The band first found popularity in the US with a string of hit singles, including "Surfin' Safari" (1962), "Surfin' USA" (1963), "Surfer Girl" (1963), "Fun, Fun, Fun" (1964) and "I Get Around" (1964). The Beach Boys' peak popularity came in the mid-1960s with the release of their album "Pet Sounds" (1966), often considered one of the greatest albums of all time, and the following album "Good Vibrations" (1966), which featured the hit single of the same name. Brian Wilson's growing creative ambition subsequently led to his withdrawal from touring and creative direction of the group, which was eventually taken over by cousin Mike Love. Although the Beach Boys continued to record and tour throughout the 1970s and 1980s, they were less commercially and critically successful than in their heyday. Since the 1990s, highly publicized legal disputes over royalties, songwriting credits, and use of the group's name have occurred. Dennis Wilson died in 1983 due to drowning. Carl Wilson died of cancer in 1998. After Carl's death, various live configurations led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston continued to tour in the 2000s, although Brian Wilson had not performed with them in decades. Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, the only members to have remained actively involved throughout their career, released a new album, "That's Why God Made the Radio", in 2012. The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them at number 12 on their list of the "100 greatest artists of all time" - the second highest ranking for a group behind only the Beatles - and the magazine ranked "Pet Sounds" as the second greatest album of all time the same year. In 2011, the group received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
