Ella Fitzgerald war eine US-amerikanische Jazzsängerin, die als eine der größten Stimmen des Jazz der Geschichte gilt. Sie begann ihre Karriere im Savoy Ballroom in Harlem im Jahr 1934 und nahm erstmals im Jahr 1935 mit dem Big Band von Chick Webb auf. Fitzgerald unterschrieb bei Decca Records im Jahr 1936 und nahm mehrere Alben auf, darunter "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" und "The Cole Porter Songbook". Sie tourte 1938 mit dem Band von Benny Goodman und veröffentlichte ihr erstes Soloalbum "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook" im Jahr 1956. Fitzgerald wurde von DownBeat Magazin im Jahr 1960 als "The First Lady of Jazz" bezeichnet. Sie nahm mehrere Alben mit dem Label Verve Records auf, wie "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook" und "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Harold Arlen Songbook". Fitzgerald wurde 1973 in Frankreich zum Ritter der Ehrenlegion ernannt und verstarb am 15. Juni 1996 in Beverly Hills, Kalifornien.
