Roy Orbison was an American singer-songwriter of rock and roll, born on April 23, 1936 in Vernon, Texas, and died on December 6, 1988 in Nashville, Tennessee. Considered one of the greatest singers of rock and roll of all time, he was best known for his melancholic and sentimental songs, with elaborate arrangements, as well as for his very expressive tenor voice. He was also an excellent guitarist, with a style influenced by country and rockabilly. Throughout his career, he sold over 90 million records worldwide, including over 60 million in the United States. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971.
