Roxy Music

BIOGRAPHY

Roxy Music is a British rock pop-art band from London, England, formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry, along with Graham Simpson, Brian Eno, Andy Mackay, and Paul Thompson. The band experienced limited commercial success in the UK and continental Europe in the 1970s, but had a major impact on the development of rock and pop in the 1980s and 1990s. Roxy Music was ranked #39 in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. The band disbanded in 1983, but has occasionally reunited for tours and albums since then. Roxy Music was formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry, a former fine arts student at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, together with Graham Simpson, ex-bassist of Sparks, and Brian Eno, a former student at the University of Winchester, who had been interested in experimental music and sound systems. Andy Mackay, a former student at the University of Oxford, joined the band as a saxophonist and clarinetist. The rhythm section was completed by Paul Thompson, former drummer of Fat Grapple, Manfred Mann and Spooky Tooth. Eno had been interested in the idea of creating "space music" and had developed an electronic approach to rock music, but abandoned this idea when he joined Roxy Music. The band members were influenced by 1950s and 1960s rock and roll, 1950s science fiction films, 1960s electronic music by Karlheinz Stockhausen, 1970s German krautrock, and 1970s English glam rock.
