BIOGRAPHY

Petula Clark is an English singer and actress born on November 15, 1932, in Epsom, Surrey. She began her career at the age of nine by singing in London jazz clubs. She made her debut on British television in Jack Hylton's musical show Hi Gang! (1951). In 1954, she signed a contract with the American television network NBC and appeared in several shows, including The Ed Sullivan Show. In 1955, she made her film debut in the French musical film Les Compagnons de la chanson. Clark achieved international success with her song "Downtown" in 1964. She then recorded several other hits, including "I Know a Place" (1965), "My Love" (1966) and "Don't Sleep in the Subway" (1967). In 1968, she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with her song "La La La", finishing in third place. Clark continued to record and tour worldwide throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1984, she played the role of Grizabella in the musical Cats at the New London Theatre. In 2002, she was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II. Petula Clark is considered one of the most popular singers of the 20th century. She has sold over 68 million records worldwide and has been honored by many institutions, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
