Michael Amberg


BIOGRAPHY

Michael Amberg is a composer and producer of contemporary classical music, born in Germany in 1966. He studied composition with renowned figures such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Gérard Grisey, and Brian Ferneyhough. After his studies, he taught composition and electroacoustics at the University of Cologne, the University of Saarland, and the University of Hildesheim. In 1992, he founded the contemporary music ensemble "Ensemble musikFabrik", of which he is the artistic director. This ensemble has been invited to perform in numerous festivals in Germany and abroad, such as the Avignon Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Ultraschall Berlin Festival, and the Holland Festival. In addition to composing, Michael Amberg has also worked as a conductor and choir director, leading renowned ensembles such as the Cologne Radio Orchestra, the Saarland Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Ensemble Modern, and the Nieuw Ensemble. He was appointed artistic director of the Cologne Contemporary Music Festival in 2006, and artistic director of the Ultraschall Berlin Festival in 2011. Michael Amberg's compositions, for ensemble, orchestra, choir, and soloists, have been performed at numerous festivals in Germany and abroad. He has received prestigious awards and prizes, including the Stockhausen Prize (1992), the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis (1998), the Ernst von Siemens Composition Prize (2002), the Grawemeyer Composition Prize (2010), and the Prince Pierre de Monaco Composition Prize (2011).
