Alicia Keys, born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981, in New York, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress, known for her R&B, soul, hip-hop, and jazz music. Keys began her musical career in 1996 with a contract at Columbia Records. She released her first album, "Songs in A Minor," in 2001, which topped the music charts in the United States and sold over ten million copies worldwide. Her second album, "The Diary of Alicia Keys" (2003), also topped the charts and sold eight million copies worldwide. She has won five Grammy Awards and has sold over 35 million albums and singles worldwide, making her one of the most popular artists of the past decade. Keys has also appeared in several films, including "The Nanny Diaries" (2007) and "Smokin' Aces" (2007). In 2008, she co-founded the NGO Keep a Child Alive with the help of American actor and activist Tony Bennett. She is also known for her activism for the rights of African Americans and for her support of Barack Obama during his campaign for the presidency of the United States in 2008. Keys was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2014. In 2016, she was named executive producer of the series "Empire," airing on the American television channel Fox.
