Bashung began his career in the 1960s playing rock'n'roll in various bands. He achieved his first success in 1968 with the single "Osez Joséphine," which reached the second place in music charts. He continued to be successful in the 1970s with songs like "Vertige de l'amour," "Ma petite entreprise," and "Gaby, oh Gaby."
In the 1980s, Bashung gained international success with the album Play blessures, which included the singles "Osez Joséphine" and "Vertige de l'amour." He continued to have success with albums like Roulette russe (1985), Chatterton (1987), and Putain de toi (1989).
In the 1990s, Bashung explored new musical territories with albums like Novice (1991), Bleu pétrole (1994), and Fantaisie militaire (1998). He had a new success with the album Osez Joséphine (2001), which included the single "Osez Joséphine." In 2007, he was elected "artist of the decade" by the Victoires de la musique.
